Cancun Restaruant Review

CANCUN RESTAURANTS

By Jules Siegel

Here are a few of the many restaurants you'll find in the Cancun User's Guide. These are all fairly well-known. We also have lots of little places that you won't find in any of the guide books. Try getting their names out of us for free. Just try it. I'll give you such a smack! Buy the book.

Checandole

Downtown, several blocks past Mercado 28 on Xel-Ha. $7 to $10. Hotel Zone, Plaza Flamingos Food Court.

Mexican home-style cooking

Any time we ask our friends for new restaurant recommendations, Checandole comes up frequently. Highly evolved tampiqueña for only $6. Tacos, meat dishes and fresh fruit drinks in a clean, friendly and pleasant place.

La Habichuela

Downtown, Margaritas 25, near Parque Las Palapas. $30. OWNERS Armando and Clara Pezzotti.

Traditional architecture, dramatic Mayan sculpture garden

This used to be Armando's home in the early days of Cancun. Now air-conditioned and enlarged, it is a pleasant and romantic place with intimate, candle-lighted atmosphere. Great mural by Miguel Castro in garden.

Los Huaraches

Downtown, Alcatraces, one block in from Hotel Antillano on Tulum. Closed Monday. $3 to $4 for a generous meal.

Cocina Económica with sit-down cafeteria.

Classic Mexican family cooking in a clean and friendly environment. Anita and I flipped over deep-fried corn-meal breaded chicken breasts stuffed with cheese and spinach (served Fridays and Sundays only) but it's all tasty and the portions are ample. Don't miss this one.

La Parrilla

Downtown, Av. Yaxchilán

Excellent Mexican food in friendly place.

Tacos al pastor -- shepherd-style are the top choice here, made with spit-barbecued tender pork sliced off to your order. Good service, modest prices and unpretentious atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Tacolote

Cobá 19, and Alcatraces, S.M. 22, across from Social Security Hospital about three blocks from Av. Tulum. PHONE 887-30-45. Home delivery, catering, banquets and Mexican fiestas. Daily from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. owners Javier Ramirez and Guadalupe Horrante Price About $3-5 a person for an ample meal.

Old-fashioned Mexican country barbecue

Tacolote specializes in traditional country-style woodfire barbeque dishes in a festive and colorful Mexican atmosphere.

This is simple, hearty and excellent cooking at popular prices, prepared and served under the ever-vigilant supervision of the proprietors. We especially enjoyed the alambre (beef or chicken tacos accompanied by melted cheese, grilled onions and green pepper).

Tale of the
Little Seamstress

Once upon a time, there was a little seamstress who sewed mightily on his sewing machine. The other machines in his neighborhood laughed at him, and shouted: "Fairy! Only old women are streamstresses!" So the little seamstress sewed shut the mouths of everyone who made fun of him. That is why, to this day, we do not know how the story ended, because no one could tell it.
