DRIVING TO ISLA HOLBOX FROM CANCUN

Isla Holbox Map The village you need to get to on the mainland to take the ferry across to Isla Holox is Chiquila.

Driving instructions for getting from Cancun Airport to Chiquila:

Exit the airport. You will meet the main Hwy to Cancun or Tulum & Playa Del Carmen. Go right toward Tulum & Playa del Carmen. You will be heading South. The very First EXIT approximately one mile will say MERIDA/CHICHEN ITZA CUOTA. Take that exit to the RIGHT.

You are now heading west on a two lane road. Start watching the Mile Post Markers on the right side of road. 305,304 303 etc... Past #296 start watching for a series of RED Reflective Highway Emergency Triangles, the kind you put in the road if you had a flat tire. Three of these will be hanging from the bushes on the right side of the road.

Just past this will be a gravel road on the right with a small wooden shack. There is a rope across this road. A boy will come out. PAY HIM 10 Pesos, he'll drop the rope. Continue on this gravel road about a mile or so. It dead ends on to the FREE ROAD to Merida (it's a four lane boulevard) Turn LEFT going west again. Just past this the road SPLITS TOLLROAD to Merida Left up & over the bridge or LIBRE FREE straight ahead. GO STRAIGHT on the "LIBRE" If you don't the next exit is 75 miles!

Continue west on this road [Hwy 180] go through Leona Vicario, then just as you enter the next town Valladolid Nuevo just as you hit the first SPEED-BUMP "TOPES" (Just after MILEPOST 262) you'll see a little roadside palapa on the right TURN Right. It's a BRAND NEW BLACK ASPHALT Road. Follow this around & thru the little town of "ESPERANZA" (The primary industry here is the production of Charcoal). Continue on the road about 6 miles near the next town of San Pedro, when the road ends TURN Right.

You're now on the main road to Chiquila (With these two shortcuts you've saved almost one hr of drive time & Cancun traffic hassles, police etc.).

Follow this road North thru Kantunilkin, several other small towns until you arrive in Chiquila. The last 15 miles are still under construction. Go all the way to the end of the road in Chiquila . It dead ends at the Pemex Gas station. Go left along the waterfront blvd & look to your left for a small hand-painted turquoise sign "PANCHOS PARKING". Park there securely for $4 a day & then take your belongings out on the pier & buy your tickets for the next ferry!

When you arrive Holbox take one of the GolfCar Taxis to your final destination hotel.

SAFE DRIVING!

Bring light ponchos for rain gear. These can be purchased from most camping stores. Many stadiums also carry a light poncho to sell to fans of local football teams. These work great as well. They are small and light and easy to carry anywhere you go as a rain cloud can come in no time and dump a monsoon on your head.

The Tale of
the Newsboy

Once upon a time there was a little newsboy who was very, very poor and he only sold old newspapers because he didn't have enough money for new ones. People didn't by his newspapers because they were all so out of date, and they wanted new newspapers. So the little newsboy never sold any, and every day he accumulated more and more old newspapers. What the little newsboy did was put up a paper recycling plant, and he became a millionaire, bought out all the newspaper businesses and the news agencies, prohibited publishing current news, and thus obliged people to read only news of the past. In the papers on sale today, for example, you'd read that the Zapatistas are about to arrive in Mexico City and that they'll meet with the Villistas there. You can't quite make out the date, but it seems to either 1914 or 1997.
