Pack a dryer sheet in your suitcase for long flights - this helps to eliminate that musty "airplane odor" and you'll have a "just washed" air to your clothes when you unpack.

DRIVING TO ISLA HOLBOX FROM MERIDA

Isla Holbox Map The village you need to get to on the mainland to take the ferry across to Isla Holox is Chiquila.

Driving instructions for getting from Merida to Chiquila:

Take HWY 180 the main Road toward Cancun.

Approximately 68Km east of Merida on the four lane you'll come to the town of KANTUNIL. There the road separates. Take the TOLL ROAD to the left. Continue on to the PISTE (Chichen Itza) Toll. Pay & continue East. Next exit is Vallodolid. Exit there & go South approx one mile. See the green overhead sign CANCUN - go left. Follow this bypass until it dead ends back onto Free Hwy 180.

Turn Left - Drive through Ticuch, Chemax, Xcan & Finally Nuevo and Xcan. You will cross the State line from Yucatan to Quintana Roo shortly before Nuevo Xcan. Continue east approximately file miles & you will see another big green overhead sign, "Kantunilkin & Holbox" - TURN LEFT.

After the 1st little town (Approx five miles) the road forks. Go right, continue on to Kantunilkin, then San Angel, Solferino and finally Chiquila.

The road from Kantunilkin and Chiquila is under construction so drive safely. In Chiquila go all the way to the end in front of Pemex Gas Station continue along the front Malecon Boulevard. Look left for a small hand-painted wood sign tuquoise in color, it says, "PANCHOS PARKING". Park there [$40 pesos a day].

Board one of the three different public ferries on the pier to Holbox [$60 pesos per person]. The last one is 7:00 PM. After 7:00 you will need to negotiate with a local fisherman boat $300-350 pesos per boat. The ferry takes approximately 30 minutes or less to cross.
