Getting Around the Mayan Riviera

MAYAN RIVIERA TRANSPORTATION

BUS

Many of the fascinating attractions located in the Mayan Riviera are located off of highway 307 which runs along the coast from Cancun to Chetumal.

Busses run out of Playa del Carmen to virtually any destination in Mexico. Actually, busses run out of any 1st class bus station to any destination in Mexico. 2nd and 3rd class busses run on daily routes.

A couple bus lines run busses up and down 307 all day, seven days a week.

Buses coming from Cancun and places along the coast, such as Tulum, arrive at Playa del Carmen at the Riviera bus station, at the corner of Juárez and Quinta Avenida, by the town square. Buses coming from destinations in the interior of the peninsula or out of state arrive at the ADO station, on Avenida 20 between 12th and 14th streets.

Taking the bus is an inexpensive and reliable means of getting around the Mayan Riviera.

For more information see: Mexican Bus
Schedule and ticket info:

COLECTIVO

Colectivo's are vans that run up and down 307 from Tulum to Playa del Carmen and Playa del Carmen to Cancun. This is by far the most economical way to get around.

For more information see: What is a Colectivo

TAXI

You can get a taxi almost anywhere in Mexico. Even in the most deserted out of the way place, there will be a taxi.

Taxi rates are often posted in hotel lobbies and there is usually one taxi sitting out front any hotel or attraction on the Riviera.

For more information see: Taxi Cab
Taxi rates in Playa del Carmen see: Playa del Carmen Taxi Rates

CAR RENTAL

There are numerous car rental agencies in the Yucatan Peninsula. They have offices in every tourist zone, at Cancun Airport [just outside the airport], Playa del Carmen, Merida, Campeche, and Chetumal.

For more information see: Renting A Vehicle

FERRY

For persons wishing to take a trip to Cozumel, you either fly in when the airport is operating [does not operate during low season for International flights] or take the ferry across from Playa del Carmen.

For more information see: Cozumel Ferry

BOAT

If you would like to traverse the coast in a boat, simply walk the beach of Playa del Carmen and speak to any of the small boat owners and arrange a tour.

AIRPORT TRANSFER

You can take a taxi [$50 - $60 USD], take the bus to the airport [runs every 15 minutes out of Playa del Carmen] or book an airport transfer.

For airport transfer information see: Cancun Airport Transfers

MOTORCYCLE

You can rent Harleys in Playa del Carmen and Cancun. In Playa del Carmen go to Rent A Harley-Davidson Motorcycle located at HWY 307 & Constituyentes.

The owner of TravelYucatan.com has a 99 Sportster 1200, 83 HD XR 1000 and a 84 HD XR 1000 motor with zero miles. He is presently building a custom XR 1000 Street Fighter.

SCOOTERS

Many resorts have them for rent. There are also a number of rental shops in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel. Those things are poorly maintained "death-traps". You are risking your life renting one of those things. Please don't.

BICYCLE

Most resort-hotels have bicycles, which you can use for usually one hour. You can also rent the bikes for longer times, but you are not allowed to take them off the hotel grounds.

WALKING

Some of the hotel-resorts on the Riviera are actually close to something of interest, within walking distance. The problem is that depending on what time of the year you visit it can be treacherously hot making even a half mile walk unbearable. Especially when you can turn around and hit the pool or beach.

Take a battery operated smoke detector and flashlight with you on your trip and keep it on the nightstand in your hotel room during the night.

Tale of the
Little Seamstress

Once upon a time, there was a little seamstress who sewed mightily on his sewing machine. The other machines in his neighborhood laughed at him, and shouted: "Fairy! Only old women are streamstresses!" So the little seamstress sewed shut the mouths of everyone who made fun of him. That is why, to this day, we do not know how the story ended, because no one could tell it.

The Mexican name for the Atlantic coastal region of the Yucatan Peninsula is Riviera Maya. The English use is either Maya Riviera or Mayan Riviera. It is used all three ways in this web site.
