GETTING THERE

Tulum Mexico Hotels Tulum is located approximately 81 miles [131 km] from Cancun.

From the airport:

  • Take ADO/Mayab bus to Playa del Carmen, transfer to Tulum bus or colectivo.
  • Take ADO bus to Cancun City Bus Terminal then bus to Tulum.
  • Taxi/Limo from airport direct to hotel in Tulum.
  • Use Airport Transfer services.

    From Cancun City/Tourist Zone:

  • Bus south up Hwy 307 from Cancun bus station to Tulum.
  • Taxi   Taxis are found in all Cancun tourist zones.
  • Take the Colectivo in Cancun to Playa del Carmen.

NOTE: Playa del Carmen is the area's bus/colectivo transfer destination.

    From Playa del Carmen:

  • Bus [from Playa del Carmen bus station] and get off on highway 307 then take taxi or walk to hotel, Tulum Pueblo, or ruins.
  • Colectivo from Playa del Carmen. Get off on highway 307 then take taxi or walk to hotel, Tulum Pueblo, or ruins.
  • Taxi from Playa del Carmen to hotel, Tulum Pueblo, or ruins.

From Palenque, Xpuhil, Chetumal, Felipe Carrillo Puerto:

The ADO bus runs 1st class busses along a route from Palenque to Cancun [right through Tulum Pueblo], seven days a week. There are also 2nd and 3rd class busses that run these routes. We recommend 1st class for speed and convenience.

Mexico does not have Chicken Busses like Guatemala, although we have ridden on some that come close. These are usually only out in the countryside in remote areas.

From the Interior [Uxmal, Ticul] and West [Campeche, Merida]:

This is where things start to get tricky and knowing a little Spanish helps. ADO does not run 1st class busses through the jungle so you have to either go the long way around [North or Southern route] to get from Campeche to Tulum or you go through the jungle taking 2nd and 3rd class busses.

Connecting times never merge, lots of waiting, 2nd and 3rd class busses make lots of stops and don't have bathrooms. These busses also get stoped at military roadblocks and checkpoints often and the citizens harassed. It is a good idea to have your passport readily available when traveling these routes.

    Tale of the
    Little Seamstress

Once upon a time, there was a little seamstress who sewed mightily on his sewing machine. The other machines in his neighborhood laughed at him, and shouted: "Fairy! Only old women are streamstresses!" So the little seamstress sewed shut the mouths of everyone who made fun of him. That is why, to this day, we do not know how the story ended, because no one could tell it.

The Mexican name for the Atlantic coastal region of the Yucatan Peninsula is "Riviera Maya". The English use is either Maya Riviera or Mayan Riviera. It is used all three ways in this web site.
