Mayan Riviera Frequently Asked Questions

MAYAN RIVIERA F.A.Q.

Mayan Riviera Maya Bicycles

Are there any towns or cities in the Mayan Riviera?

Yes, Playa del Carmen and Tulum to the south.

How do I get to Playa del Carmen from the airport?

You can pre-purchase an Airport Transfer ticket on-line which will secure a seat on a comfortable bus, you can take a taxi [or black-market taxi] or take a shuttle [only available at the International Airport] or a ADO/Mayab Bus which you get at the International Airport.

How do I get from one airport to the other?

There is a shuttle service that runs back and forth all day.

Mayan Riviera Maya Office Depot

Is American money accepted in the Mayan Riviera?

Yes, American money is generally accepted everywhere but using Mexican currency is recommended. Change is always given in pesos.

What is a colectivo?

A colectivo is a mini-bus [van] that runs up and down the coast along highway 307 from Cancun to Tulum. It is an inexpensive way to travel up and down the Riviera.

Are there any real Mayan people living in the Mayan Riviera.

Yes, the Maya flourish!

Mayan Riviera Maya Nightlife

Where is the best place to snorkel?

Visit our snorkel page and view the possibilities.

Are there lots of bugs?

If you go into the jungle during the rainy season there are lots of mosquitoes. During the dry season the bugs are not bad.

What is better Xcaret or Xel-Ha?

Xel-Ha is primarily for snorkeling/swimming while Xcaret also has snorkeling and swimming but much much more. We strongly recommend visiting Xcaret at least once!

How do I get to Cozumel?

You take a ferry, which you catch in Playa del Carmen. There are two ferry lines transporting passengers now. The ferries leave every hour. The ride is approximately 45 minutes, depending on the sea conditions.

What is better to visit Chichen Itza or Coba?

Chitzen Itza is definitely the Mayan ruin site to visit if you are only going to visit one site during your stay.

Mayan Riviera Maya Pets

Can we swim at Tulum ruins?

Yes but there are no change-rooms.

Where is the best shopping?

There is good shopping in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum ruins and Tulum Pueblo.

Can I bring seashells back home on the airplane?

Yes, but you cannot bring King Conch shells or coral.

What is the rule of thumb when tipping?

Same as tipping anywhere else. Tip if you feel the service provided to you was worthy. You can tip your maid daily or on the last day or even the first. We suggest a combination of things from the dollar store and pesos. Bartenders prefer cash as do bell boys and waiters.

How do I get from my resort to Playa del Carmen?

Some resorts have a complimentary shuttle service [most don't], all will have a taxi stand, or you can take the colectivo. Hotels usually post taxi fares in the lobby. Taxis should NOT charge more, but some may charge less.

Tale of the
Little Seamstress

Once upon a time, there was a little seamstress who sewed mightily on his sewing machine. The other machines in his neighborhood laughed at him, and shouted: "Fairy! Only old women are streamstresses!" So the little seamstress sewed shut the mouths of everyone who made fun of him. That is why, to this day, we do not know how the story ended, because no one could tell it.

The Mexican name for the Atlantic coastal region of the Yucatan Peninsula is Riviera Maya. The English use is either Maya Riviera or Mayan Riviera. It is used all three ways in this web site.
