The Yucatan's Institute for preserving the Mayan language is called INDEMAYA. They are holding their 5th Annual Contest for songs written in the Mayan language. For many years, the central Railroad Station in Merida has been left empty. Now it is being renovated to its former splendor, and when it is completed, it will house an art school. Next time you visit the White City, walk east from the Zocalo to Calle 50. You will come to Mejorada Park, the site of the Mejorada Church and the University of Yucatan's Architecture School. Turn left on Calle 50 and walk two blocks. The Railroad Station will be on your right. Are you a railroad buff? On the other end of the railroad yard, about five blocks ahead and on the right, is Merida's Railroad Museum, which includes old railroad cars from Mexico's past.

From the 5th to the 28th of January, Merida will be celebrating its 465th Birthday with the Third International Festival of the Arts. Sculpture, painting, books, installations, dance and other events or exhibits will be scheduled throughout the city. Events will include a concert by singer Lila Downs, as well as Scrap Arts Music from Canada and Gajuka Ankoku Theatre Group from Chile.

In the beginning of December, young people from around the Peninsula will be running with torches to show their devotion for the Virgin of Guadalupe. On Tuesday, December 6th, if you are traveling, you will likely see crowds of people running or walking with torches, wearing tshirts with the likeness of the Virgin. Ahead of them you will see trucks filled with supporters, cheering them on. Late that night, churches in many different towns will be filled with the runners paying their respects to the Virgin.

You will quickly get the feeling that you can park anywhere you want. Do not. What can happen is that the police can and sometimes do take your license plates or even impound the vehicle. If it is a rental you have to pay and go through all the hassles of sorting the mess out which can totally ruin 2 days of your trip and cost you money for nothing but aggravation.

The Tale of
the Newsboy

Once upon a time there was a little newsboy who was very, very poor and he only sold old newspapers because he didn't have enough money for new ones. People didn't by his newspapers because they were all so out of date, and they wanted new newspapers. So the little newsboy never sold any, and every day he accumulated more and more old newspapers. What the little newsboy did was put up a paper recycling plant, and he became a millionaire, bought out all the newspaper businesses and the news agencies, prohibited publishing current news, and thus obliged people to read only news of the past. In the papers on sale today, for example, you'd read that the Zapatistas are about to arrive in Mexico City and that they'll meet with the Villistas there. You can't quite make out the date, but it seems to either 1914 or 1997.
