For many years, the central Railroad Station in Merida has been left empty. Now it is being renovated to its former splendor, and when it is completed, it will house an art school. Next time you visit the White City, walk east from the Zocalo to Calle 50. You will come to Mejorada Park, the site of the Mejorada Church and the University of Yucatan's Architecture School. Turn left on Calle 50 and walk two blocks. The Railroad Station will be on your right. Are you a railroad buff? On the other end of the railroad yard, about five blocks ahead and on the right, is Merida's Railroad Museum, which includes old railroad cars from Mexico's past.
From the 5th to the 28th of January, Merida will be celebrating its 465th Birthday with the Third International Festival of the Arts. Sculpture, painting, books, installations, dance and other events or exhibits will be scheduled throughout the city. Events will include a concert by singer Lila Downs, as well as Scrap Arts Music from Canada and Gajuka Ankoku Theatre Group from Chile.
In the beginning of December, young people from around the Peninsula will be running with torches to show their devotion for the Virgin of Guadalupe. On Tuesday, December 6th, if you are traveling, you will likely see crowds of people running or walking with torches, wearing tshirts with the likeness of the Virgin. Ahead of them you will see trucks filled with supporters, cheering them on. Late that night, churches in many different towns will be filled with the runners paying their respects to the Virgin.
