PLAYA DEL CARMEN NIGHT LIFE

Dragon Bar Blue Parrot Playa del Carmen If you are looking to party Playa del Carmen is a great place to go. The 5th avenue "strip" is alive at night and clubs and bars are dotted all along this strip. There is a bar that caters to every taste here so we don't particularly recommend any single club cafe or bar. It does not take long to walk up and down fifth and the many side streets so you can cover a lot of distance in an afternoon doing recognizance, picking the place you would like to visit at night.

You can also easily walk from club to club in the course of a night starting at one end of 5th avenue and ending up at the other end. If you are staying a week that is more than ample time to check out every bar in Playa if you so desire.

Drinking on the street is prohibited, however the police will not harass you if you are under control. If you are carrying a beer and staggering or acting like a goof you will get arrested. You can sit on the curb and drink a beer, casually walk around and most convenient stores sell beer. An open bottle of tequila will get you hassled and probably arrested.

Dress for clubs is anything from casual to full-tilt.

AFTER-HOURS CLUBS

Mambo Cafe Playa del Carmen There were two raving after hour clubs in Playa. The Blue Parrot and Capitan Tutix. Capitan Tutix is no longer open, however the Mambo Cafe has picked up the slack. These clubs get going around 12:00 and peak at 1:00 - 2:00. By 3:00 the girls have gone back to their hotels and you have the die-hards. By 4:00 it is pretty slow. Now it is not like this every night and some nights it rocks till the sun comes up but by and large it is as described.

The general club scene is mostly tourists but the after hour clubs are a mixture of tourists and locals. Playa del Carmen is, after all, the fastest growing city in Latin America and there are a lot of people who work and live in Playa and they like to party as well, so a night at The Parrot or Mambo Cafe is pretty interesting.

NEWSFLASH

The Dragon Bar at the Blue Parrot burnt down as a result of one of the fire dancer's fire-balls getting loose and burning down the bar's palapa roof. It has since been re-built and is fully functional again [March 2006].

Capitan Tutix is no longer open.

SPIRITS

If you drink a particular brand of spirit, then chances are you will find it in one of Playa's more upscale clubs. If a club you fancy does not carry your brand then talk to the manager [owner is better] and tell them.

ENTERTAINMENT

Since the slumps in travel occurred after 9/11 and Wilma, less visitors were going to Playa. What we have noticed is that the clubs and cafes have become more competitive and there is more entertainment being offered now. Also, as the Mayan Riviera grows and the big resorts offer entertainment of sorts, Playa has had to upgrade in order to compete and attract the all-inclusive visitors from the resorts. So, many of the clubs are offering everything from single acts to Mariachi bands.

Capitan Tutix - The first time we walked into Tutix there was a beautiful girl dressed as a jaguar standing on the main bar juggling fire, it was 4:00 in the morning. Needless to say this place rocks!
NOTE: Capitan Tutix did not make it through Hurricane Emily.

Kuba - This club is right next door to Tutix so you can easily walk over. Some nights it is a haven to relax in when Tutix gets too crowded.

Playa69 - The only gay bar on 5th is casual with friendly bartenders who can fill you in on the local scene. Located on the west side of 5th. Look for the sign.

Mambo Cafe - If you like Cuban music in a tropical vacation destination then you will love this place. Balloons, foam etc…!

Alux Cave - This is a good place to go to eat dinner and have a few drinks before heading back to the strip. The club is inside a cave. Located about 5 blocks across the highway on your left on Juarez. It opens at 7:00, the music gets going at 9:00.

The Tale of
the Ever Never

Once there was a He of the night. Shadow of shadows, solitar step, He walked many nights to find Her.

Once there was a She of the day. Twinkle of wheat, dance of light, She walked many days to find Him.

They were always looking for each other, He and She. The night was always pursuing the day. They both new, She and He, the quest for what can never be found. It seemed as if it would never happen; it seenmed impossible; it seemed never ever...

And then the dawn came for Him and for Her. Always, forever...

The Mexican name for the Atlantic coastal region of the Yucatan Peninsula is Riviera Maya. The English use is either Maya Riviera or Mayan Riviera. It is used all three ways in this web site.
